Background of the Study
Humor is increasingly recognized as a coping mechanism that can enhance resilience and alleviate stress, especially in high-pressure economic environments (Olatunji, 2023). In Oke Ero, traders face numerous challenges including fluctuating incomes, market instability, and social pressures, which have led to elevated stress levels (Adebisi, 2024). Recent studies suggest that humor and laughter not only improve mental well-being but also strengthen social ties and foster adaptive coping strategies (Balogun, 2023). By infusing humor into daily interactions, traders may experience improved emotional regulation and enhanced resilience against adversities (Chukwu, 2025). This study explores how humor serves as a psychological resource that mitigates stress and encourages a positive outlook, thereby contributing to overall resilience (Ibrahim, 2023). The examination includes both individual coping behaviors and collective cultural expressions, providing a comprehensive understanding of humor as a therapeutic tool in the commercial context (Adeola, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Traders in Oke Ero experience significant economic and social stressors that impact their mental health, yet the potential of humor as a resilience factor is underexplored (Ogunleye, 2023). The lack of empirical studies examining how humor influences coping strategies among traders limits the development of innovative interventions (Akinola, 2024). This study aims to address this gap by investigating the relationship between humor and resilience, providing insights to support trader well-being (Chidiebere, 2023).
